The North Carolina Motorsports and Automotive Research Center assists racing and automotive industry experts in areas such as vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, simulation, metrology and quality control and instrumentation. Research ranges from proprietary research for race teams to projects with the Department of Energy to undergraduate research. Examples of research:

  • Algorithms for fuel injector geometry characterization
  • Cam profile optimization and wear
  • Connecting rod modification for improved engine balance
  • Development of super speedway "soft walls"
  • Dynamics of valve train linkages
  • Finite element analysis and modeling to optimize engine components and chassis design
  • Optimizing port design for minimizing pollutant emissions of two-stroke engines
  • Production of thin-walled castings with low dimensional variation to lighten passenger cars
  • Selective assembly strategies
  • Three-dimensional fluid flow analysis of carburetor/intake flows
